10 Outdoor Adventures in Europe for Taking a Digital Detox

Have you ever tried doing a digital detox while traveling? I have two friends that have done this in the past several months and they came back from it feeling refreshed, inspired, and full of clarity by not using their phone or consuming content through other screens/internet like TVs or tablets, and instead spending more time in nature. As a freelance social media manager, a digital detox has felt a bit like a pipe dream considering the nature of my career - though, I’ve thought that doing a digital detox on a trip abroad for a day or two would be a great way to be fully present and immersed while getting the benefits of digital detoxing. (Maybe over a weekend! Haha.)

Many parts of Europe have beautiful landscapes near large cities and major airports, which could be a great way to do a digital detox - you can work in the city during the week, and then do the detox over the weekend. European travel videos keep coming up all over my algorithms right now, so the continent has definitely been on my mind!

From gorgeous mountain regions to coastal areas, here are ten outdoor adventures in Europe that seem like a dream to unplug, unwind, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the continent during a digital detox.

1. A Scenic Journey by Rail

One of the best ways to kick-start your digital detox is by embracing Europe’s efficient and scenic rail networks, making travel as enjoyable as the destination itself. Picture yourself boarding a train from Paris to London, watching the French countryside give way to England as you cross beneath the Channel. Not only is the journey a sustainable option, but it also gives you a chance to begin relaxing before you even arrive. By leaving your devices tucked away, you can fully appreciate the journey itself – a refreshing change from the usual screen-filled routine of air travel.

2. Wander the Dunes and Coastline of the Netherlands

Start in a city like Amsterdam before venturing out to the coast or the countryside!

For a peaceful escape, the Dutch coastline and unique dune landscapes offer a beautiful setting to unwind. National parks like Zuid-Kennemerland near Haarlem and the expansive De Hoge Veluwe provide tranquil trails for hiking and cycling. Along the coast, serene beaches and secluded spots invite quiet contemplation, away from the city buzz. As one of the flattest countries in Europe, the Netherlands is ideal for leisurely outdoor activities, letting you take in the scenery at your own pace. Disconnect from distractions and embrace the gentle, natural beauty of the Dutch outdoors. After visiting Amsterdam a couple of years ago and wandering through its beautiful parks in the city, I can only imagine how peaceful and beautiful parks are outside the city!

3. Discover the Ardennes Forest in Belgium

For a digital detox that combines adventure and tranquillity, consider the Ardennes in southern Belgium. Known for its dense forests, winding rivers, and rolling hills, this region offers activities like hiking, canoeing, and even rock climbing, all set against a backdrop of lush, unspoiled nature. Picturesque towns such as Durbuy – known as the smallest town in the world – provide a charming escape where you can disconnect from devices and reconnect with Belgium’s natural beauty. Whether exploring the trails or relaxing by a riverside, the Ardennes is a perfect retreat for those seeking respite from digital life.

If you’re looking to combine both countries in one trip, the Amsterdam to Brussels train offers a seamless connection between the Netherlands’ coastal charm and Belgium’s rugged forests. This was actually a trip I planned to take via train after visiting Amsterdam, but I had to switch around my itinerary - and it’s been on my mind since!

4. Explore the Majestic Swiss Alps

One of the best ways to experience them is by kayaking through the pristine waters, surrounded by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. The rugged, unspoiled beauty of Norway's landscapes encourages visitors to live in the moment – a valuable break from everyday routines.

6. Hike the Cinque Terre in Italy

Cinque Terre, Italy

For a coastal adventure, the Cinque Terre region on Italy’s Ligurian coast is a stunning destination that combines natural beauty with old-world charm. The five villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore are connected by a series of scenic hiking trails that overlook the Mediterranean Sea. You can hike through the towns, take the regional train, or drive a car to visit multiple towns (or all five). A day spent in Cinque Terre is just beautiful - think vibrant blue waters, pastel-colored houses, and the scent of lemon groves.

Cork, Ireland

Ireland is know for its greenery - and when I the landscapes are extremely green, I mean extremely green. I grew up in the Seattle area which is also rainy and has a ton of nature, but there’s something different about Ireland. With its rolling green fields, quaint villages, and scenic coastal routes, the Emerald Isle is an idyllic destination for a those who love cycling. The Great Western Greenway, a 42-kilometre stretch from Westport to Achill Island, is one of Ireland’s most picturesque cycling trails. This off-road route provides a leisurely ride through varied landscapes, from mountains and lakes to seaside views. The slower pace allows cyclists to absorb the sights, sounds, and smells of the Irish countryside, making it an excellent escape for those looking to disconnect from the digital world. I have a couple of friends that love cycling and know they’d LOVE to do a digital detox on a trip like this through Ireland.

9. Discover the Peaceful Beauty of Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes

Driving along the coast in Croatia

Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes National Park is a haven for nature lovers and an excellent spot for a digital detox. After three visits over several years to Croatia (including the Krka Waterfalls, a different waterfall system), Plitvice remains unchecked on my travel list! The park is home to 16 interconnected lakes and a series of cascading waterfalls, surrounded by forest. A network of wooden walkways winds through this UNESCO-listed site, offering visitors an up-close look at crystal-clear waters that range in color from emerald green to deep blue. With limited mobile reception within the park, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of Plitvice, enjoying a rare opportunity to disconnect from the digital world entirely.
